Be advised that traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway can be pretty bad at rush hour. So it might take you quite of a long time to get to NYC
If your flight arrives at Terminals 1, 2 or 3 at JFK, ride the “internal” AirTrain to the Terminal 8/9 stop and switch there to the “external” AirTrain to Jamaica. This way you avoid having to go all the way around to all of the terminals

Almost all international flights arrive at Terminal 4. Nevertheless, British Airways and some of its Oneworld partners operate out of Terminal 7: BA, Cathay, Iberia, and Qantas
Good to know: the other Oneworld airlines, notable including American Airlines and Qatar, operate out of Terminal 8
